Look out for our published E-book, Single Female Parents in Professional Leadership Positions ©it's Research and also latest findings on Single Male Parents in professional leadership coming very soon. Author

BACKGROUND:  Literature and Justification
"My research is an attempt to make available more knowledge of single female parents in professional leadership positions.  My intentions are to try and motivate and give guidelines in making accomplishment of sustaining these occupations more successful.  Whilst being able to acquire more in depth awareness to benefit myself and others who fit these demographic profiles or who may be interested in this area of study.

Therefore, the research intends to contribute to any previous research which has identified any factors that may delay or prevent these positive professional advancements, thus enabling female parents to utilise as preventative positive resolutions to enable career development.  However, this research also intends to highlight any contributory research on the positive aspects of female parents’ career advancement.

My choice of research topic is mainly due to personal interest in single parents and their career potentials in senior occupational posts.  As a single parent myself with twin babies and a teenage son and having great aspirations of becoming a senior manager, with past experiences in managing a 25-team organisation with great discomfort, and my previous studies in Business.  I am completely fascinated by in depth research to obtain more understanding of the favourable and disadvantageous variables associated with obtaining and sustaining a leadership profession.

My previous studies were in related areas such as sociology, psychology, specific business modules such as, behaviour at work, understanding the nature of work, transitions in work, human resources in organisations, as well as organisational and strategic management, accounting and finance, as well as 15 years experience in office administration with some 5 years in supervisory and first line management positions within the public and third sector as well as a small proportion of employment within the private sector.  These experiences I feel do add to my philosophy in being able to offer some contribution towards this study.

The intentions of this research are also to gain more insight into the possibilities and motivational factors which could assist me and others similar to me in achieving a senior management role in business.  These are some of the reasons why the research is worth my endeavours.

There have been various academic sources of literature available specifically related to single parents and on the other disciplines of business management.  There are also sources that combine both elements.  The subject areas that would be utilised to aid this compilation may come under three separate disciplines, namely human resource management, recruitment and selection but mainly areas considered with leadership within the business management discipline.  There are various secondary and tertiary sources of data available that can be accessed and with some guidance through primary sources.  These types of data derive from books, journals, statistics, government surveys, dissertations, government data and various newspaper articles.

My particular research is more centred on specifically obtaining leadership or management roles in business, as a single mother in the global economy.  This area of study seems to not have as much research as the previous and present studies I have read because literature related to this specific business management role on their own, but not a lot of information having the two elements combined together.

I will draw on previous studies and concepts within equal opportunities and human resource and selection theories as well as the nature of management and leadership and the various perspectives associated with them. "(©Saldeba N.)

Top Ten Characteristics of Successful Women Business Leaders

By: Sharon Hadary, Executive Director

Women are transforming the face of business and society, moving into leadership roles as business owners and in corporations. What are the characteristics that set successful women business leaders apart? Research and experience suggest that these top ten characteristics are key for women business leaders to maximize success the 21st century.

1. DEFINE SUCCESS IN YOUR OWN TERMS

It is so easy to let others -- usually very well intentioned friends, family, mentors and business associates -- define your goals. Take control of your destiny by deciding how you define success.

2. BE VALUES-BASED
The most successful women know what their values are, and in everything they do, their behavior is consistent with these values.

3. ACKNOWLEDGE AND OWN YOUR POWER
Acknowledge what is unique about you – whether it is your leadership style, your way of making decisions, or your ability to take control of your own destiny. Leverage your power to foster change and success in all areas.

4. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS... AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Simply put: If it feels right, it usually is right!

5. RECOGNIZE YOUR STRENGTHS
Identify your strengths and those responsibilities you enjoy. Build your business utilizing those strengths. You can always hire someone to do what you hate to do or don’t do well .

6. NURTURE YOUR “MIDAS TOUCH”
Profitability and wealth creation are integral to business growth. For most leaders, financial success is a tangible reward for all that they put into their businesses and professional lives. Earn it – and enjoy it.

7. YOUR TIME AND ENERGY ARE VALUABLE RESOURCES
Your time and energy are resources to you, your business, your family and your friends. You are as scarce and valuable as any other resources in the business, and in your personal life, you are irreplaceable. Learn to set priorities to determine what and how much you will do, saying “yes” at the right times -- and saying “no’ at the right times, too.

8. INVEST IN YOUR PERSONAL SELF
Invest both time and money in your health and well-being – a regular massage, manicure, exercise or meditation, for example. Equally important is investing in your intellectual and spiritual well-being through reading, seminars, and professional and personal retreats.

9. BUILD SUPPORT NETWORKS
Build multiple support networks. Some should be for business counsel and contacts, including those that will help you measure your progress toward your goals. Other networks can help you manage your personal and family responsibilities and provide emotional support to enable you to balance your life in good and bad times.

10. ALWAYS LEAVE TIME FOR SERENDIPITY
Don’t pack your schedule so full there isn’t time for doing those spontaneous and serendipitous things that bring delight and joy into our lives.

"..change corporate culture, you are also trying to change a microcosm of society's attitudes on race.."

"I Had No Fear. I still Don't." by Linda Spradley Dunn

WorkingWomen2000.com Linda Spradley Dunn speaks about strong ideas in a powerful voice and she never, ever minces words. This time she is talking about women of color in corporate America. "There is a particular issue with women of color in corporate America. And it does add to our impatience, because when you're trying to change corporate culture, you are also trying to change a microcosm of society's attitudes on race. That can be very frustrating."

Cyber defences of SMEs lag behind larger firms, study confirms

Cyber defences of SMEs lag behind larger firms, study confirms

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) suffer more from malware than larger organisations, but their security procedures are lagging behind, says security firm, Kaspersky Lab.
SMEs are typically more vulnerable to viruses, worms, spyware and other malicious software, according to Kaspersky Lab’s latest Global IT Security Risks survey.
The survey, which polled more than 3,000 information security professionals in 22 countries, found that 63% of small companies and 60% of medium-sized organisations have faced malware within the business network over the past 12 months.
Larger companies, by contrast, tend to suffer more from other threats, such as corporate espionage, phishing anddistributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.
Smaller organisations were also found to implement fewer, or less well-developed, IT security measures than large-scale enterprises.
Some 19% of small businesses and 15% of medium-sized organisations agreed that their business tends to be reactive, focusing on IT security only after a breach has occurred. Less than a quarter of SMEs rate themselves as “really proactive”.
The study also found that larger enterprises have a higher level of awareness and IT security competency. About half of these enterprises use only licensed and paid security solutions, while 70% of respondents from small companies and 58% of medium-sized businesses believe that unlicensed products can also provide the required protection.
“These findings demonstrate that SMEs are at risk due to poor IT security. It is essential to change attitudes towards this risk, and enhance protection levels, in order to keep businesses safe,” the survey report said.

EE released details of a survey about the benefits of 4G to businesses. It found that 74% of UK businesses plan to use 4G within 12 months. Newcastle’s businesses show highest demand and sales staff and the CEO will be first to use 4G.
It also revealed that 58% of UK businesses expect 4G to increase productivity and 38% said it will improve employee well-being and motivation.

“The cost of video is dropping and it is becoming so inexpensive to communicate via video," he said.
Accenture uses video in both its internal operation and its services business.
“Our clients love being able to meet experts without them having to fly out for a one hour meeting,” says Modruson.
He says businesses should take a look at how consumers are using video: “We have it at home, but we have not yet brought it into the workplace. But it’s coming.”
“Ten years ago, doing what you do on Skype would have cost thousands of dollars. Now it is on everyone’s desktop and is almost free.”
